We only have 5 weeks of our school year to go here at the AllStars, and its that time of the year where we have final tests and exams. That’s part of the reason that we haven’t posted much lately - but soon we shall be back to normal and powering down to the end of the year
Good Luck everybody!

Visitors from the Cook Islands

We recently had some wonderful visitors from the Cook Islands come to our school. The students were from a Primary School and ranged in ages from 5 to 12 years old. Their school Principal and lots of family members came with them to Australia.
The visitors were fantastic musicians and dancers. They performed for us in our COLA (covered outdoor learning area) which reverberated with the awesome sounds of the drums. All the adults played the drums and the students danced for us.
Sometimes the boys danced by themselves, sometimes the girls, and sometimes everyone danced together.
All the kids from our school clapped along and couldn’t wait to get up and join in dancing with our visitors. Even the teachers got up and wriggled and jiggled to the drum beats
Finally, when everyone was exhausted we all sat back down and farewelled our newest friends. Wouldn’t it be exciting to visit them in the Cook Islands someday?
Reading Circles

Last term we studied some stories in Reading Circles. Each group chose a text to read and met every week or so to talk about their book. We found interesting vocab and made up open-ended questions to ask the other members of the group. Nearly everyone enjoyed doing this.
At the end of the book we all had to make a Story Quilt in our group.
Each person had a square of paper and had to draw a border around it. Inside the border we had to draw three objects that related to our text. Everyone in the group had to use the same 3 objects in the same 3 colours, but we could each design our border however we wanted.
In the middle of the quilt square we had to draw a character from the story. We had to find a quote in the story that we thought summed up our character, and add it to our drawing.
We then stuck our quilt square onto black paper and they are now on the wall in our classroom.
Here are our Story Quilts:

We are writing posts on our own blogs to support Blog Action Day 2008.
We have been looking at how poverty affects education, and how education can help the fight against poverty.
We’ve looked at how school is important to us, why education should be available to all students, and the various places around our school that are important to us.
Click on our blog posts on October 15th to read what we’ve got to say!

Nounours, the little French teddy from Walker Road School in Scotland is going home
He has been visiting the AllStars - seeing the sights of Sydney Australia, and even meeting some of the wildlife too!
But now its time for him to head back “up and over” to Scotland - so goodbye Nounours, we have had lots of fun with you.
We will all miss you - boo hoo!

This term our school has been involved in a project called “Small Words Count” as part of National Literacy and Numeracy Week celebrations.
We have been looking at word problems, how they are written, what they are asking us to do, and how we should read and interpret what we have to do.
Each class had to demonstrate what they had been learning about in this project.
We constructed some designs and made up word problems using percentages or fractions.
This is what we came up with:

We’ve been studying
- the human body
- keeping fit and active
- healthy lifestyles
so we thought it would be fun to make some skeleton artworks.
What you need:
Water colour paints
A4 white paper
Black art paper (or paint your own like we did!)
Paintbrushes
What to do:
- Using the watercolours, paint stripes over the whole A4 paper
- Paint the bigger paper black
- Wait for the papers to dry
- Photocopy some body parts
- Carefully trace the body part you want onto the stripy paper
- Cut out and glue onto the black paper
- Hang or display in your room!
